enough to attend cranbrook in suburban detroit. as of this year the cost of a full year's tuition is $38,900. do you think we owe as a nation every pupil in america the equivalent of a $38,900 education every year? >> well, i don't know that -- a dollar number always equates to how effective the teacher is. i was delighted to have a terrific education at a private institution, that's not going to be available for the entire nation, but i know there are teachers in the public system that are every bit as good as those that are in the private system. i don't know that i place a dollar figure upon it, and as i look at my own experience in my state of massachusetts, dollar spending per pupil wasn't a very good determining factor of how well the student would do. at one point i looked at all the school districts in massachusetts, we have 351 cities and towns. i plotted spending per student against the achievement of the average student in each district. and there was no relationship at all, interestingly. as a matter of fact, the district that spent the most per pupil and had the smallest cla
of the hardest-hit areas by the housing collapse, and 6% in minneapolis and detroit. however, prices dropped compared to last year in atlanta, new york, chicago, and las vegas. staples will shut down more stores. the chain will close 15 stores in the u.s., and 45 stores in europe. staples is attempting to cut costs in order to invest in its online and mobile business. it hopes to save around $250 million by 2015. toys 'r' us begins hiring 45,000 holiday workers this week. that's 5 thousand more than last year. the retailer joins walmart, khol's and target in hiring seasonal workers. it's predicted holiday sales will jump 3 to 4% this year and stores are starting now to expand staff to get into position for shoppers. a manager at target had this observation about job hunters. "we definitely see a lot of applicants that need extra money for the holiday season and are looking to pick up an extra job or so. but we are also continuing to see people that need employment and are looking for anything temporary that could turn into a permanent position." toys r us kept on 15% of seasonal workers aft

is buried beneath a home in detroit. yesterday, all eyes were on the home as police removed two soil samples from underneath a shed. they were acting on a tip from a man dying of cancer who says he saw a body being buried at the home around the time hoffa disappeared. a scan of the area showed something under a concrete slab, but police are not sure what exactly it is. >> it could be a dead body. if not hoffa, then somebody else. or it could be the root of a tree. who notice. >> police say the soil samples are being tested for traces of human remains, and that nothing else was found during the dig. hoff that was last seen outside -- hoffa was last seen outside a restaurant in suburban detroit back in 1975. >>> new this morning, it's official. the n.f.l. referees have approved a new eight year contract. now that contract comes after a three-month lockout that made headlines when replacement referees made a highly controversial call that gave the seahawks a win over the packers. one referee called the hail mary pass a touchdown while the other ruled it was an interception. the new contract cal
